PLAYING FRIDA

This photo series is part of an ongoing concept titled Playing Frida that talks about different aspects and facets to Frida Kahlo and how they manifest themselves today in people.
This particular series explores Frida's relationships with women. As you may know, she never bound herself sexually or in spirit to one particular gender, she fell in love with whoever she felt a connection with. These photographs are a depiction of how she related herself to the feminine and masculine spaces of mind that existed within her.

Bismillah

By sheer coincidence (if one is to believe in coincidences), I ended up at the Festival of Sufism. A week long fest where I encountered sufi masters, learned the art of sufism, practiced sema (whirling), and immersed myself in endless qawaali nights. This is just a tiny peek into the humbling and divine experience that it was.

The first two photographs are of the renowned sufi masters at the festival - Dr. Rahmi Oruç Güvenç and his wife Andrea Azize Güvenç from Turkey, and Fawzia Al-Rawi from Iraq. The rest of the photographs are of sufis from all over the world.
